Alkmaar and Volendam

Today we went to Alkmaar, where there is a market cheese every Friday morning. There is a competition who can carrier the most cheese in a sleigh. The cheese wheels weigh 20 kg each and they carry 8 wheels at a time. Peter liked because he saw a glockenspiel. There is a stand with raw fish called the new herring a dutch delicacy but we didn't have the courage to try it. We ate poffertjes, a sugar pancake instead. The market is very colourful and the city is a typical and small historic dutch town with canals and gable-topped houses, surround by water and wind mills.
After that we went to visit Volendam an old fishing village on the Ijsselmeer's river. A maze of quaint houses behind the harbour, souvenir shops, restaurants with a special atmosphere. You can still find many people walking around in traditional dress. These villages have preserved their character for many centuries. Volendam has a lot of pleasure craft in the harbour from traditional fishing to modern sleek boats.
