Wieliczka historic salt mine

Today we went to visit the famous salt mine of Poland the historical Wieliczka salt mine, it is one of the most interesting places that we have had the opportunity to visit, it is one of Polands top 5 attractions, the mine is a huge complex of excavations which consists of 22 chambers some huge and all connected by 2klm of tunnels the visit takes about 2 hours but you only see a small part of the whole mine the route includes beautifully carved chambers galleries and a beautiful chapel all carved from salt, there are souvenir shops a restaurant and toilets, we descended 135 meters down via a stair-well 57 levels, the miners would cut blocks weighing 700 to 1000 kilograms then cart them out using man power on a sleigh , then they used horses then train and wagons hard and dangerous work when miners would meet they would not say hello they said god bless you - some of the timber supports in the mine are more then 300 years old the salt preserves the wood and makes it get even harder. There are many grand sculptures throughout the mine all carved from salt we exited the mine via the 4 deck miners lift 135 meters in less then 40 seconds, another place well worth a visit.
